A total of 183 people — including 137 children — have been taken away since law enforcement officers raided the compound Thursday night, said Marleigh Meisner, a spokeswoman for the Texas Child Protective Services Division.

The children — most of them girls — were being interviewed by special investigators, she said.

“We’re trying to find out if they’re safe,” she explained. “We need to know if they have been abused or neglected.”

Eighteen of the girls have been taken into state custody.

Authorities believe that they “had been abused or were at immediate risk of future abuse,” said Child Protective Services spokesman Darrell Azar.

The others were taken to a nearby civic center. Meisner described them as doing “remarkably well.”

Authorities continue to search the 1,900-acre YFZ ranch, occupied by followers of imprisoned polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, and at least one man is being sought by police.

Law enforcement agencies raided the ranch Thursday night after receiving a report Monday that a 16-year-old girl had been “sexually and physically abused,” Azar said.

Jeffs, the 52-year-old leader and “prophet” of the 10,000-member church, was convicted in Utah last year and sentenced to 10 years on two counts of being an accomplice to rape, charges related to a marriage he performed in 2001. He faces trial in Arizona on eight charges of sexual conduct with a minor, incest and conspiracy.

Jeffs’ Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints bought the land near Eldorado four years ago and built the ranch, which they call the YFZ Ranch. The letters are said to refer to the words Yearning for Zion.

It is home to as many as 400 members who relocated from their Arizona and Utah compounds.

State and local law enforcement agencies set up roadblocks around the ranch Thursday evening, preventing journalists from seeing what was happening on the property, according to Randy Mankin, editor of the Eldorado Success weekly newspaper.

“This came totally out of the blue,” Mankin said.

There were no indications of violence around the ranch, he said.

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church) is the largest Mormon fundamentalist denomination and one of America’s largest practitioners of plural marriage The FLDS Church emerged in the 1930s as an apostate offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church); the split occurred largely because of the LDS Church’s continued renunciation of polygamy and its decision to excommunicate practitioners of plural marriage in southern Utah and northern Arizona. There is no official connection between the FLDS Church and the LDS Church; they are distinct and separate denominations.
Since its inception, the headquarters of the FLDS Church have been in Hildale, Utah, which is a twin city with Colorado City, Arizona. However, news reports since 2004 have suggested a possible shift of the church’s headquarters to Eldorado, Texas, where a temple has been built by FLDS Church members. As of 2007, the church was being led by Warren Jeffs, who succeeded his father Rulon Jeffs in 2002. For nearly two years, Warren Jeffs had been wanted on sex-crimes charges; and from May 2004 until his arrest in August 2006 he was on the FBI’s Ten Most-Wanted List. On September 25, 2007, Jeffs was found guilty of two counts of being an accomplice to rape and was sentenced to ten years to life in prison.
Although news reports have circulated that Warren Jeffs had formally resigned as the president of the FLDS Church, the statement released by his attorneys reads as follows: “Mr. Jeffs resigned as President of the Corporation of the President of The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Inc., on November 20, 2007.” It is possible that Warren Jeffs is still heading the FLDS church, as the narrowly crafted statement by his attorneys does not state that he stepped down as prophet of the church. William E. Jessop, Jeffs’ first counselor in the FLDS church presidency, was named by Jeffs as his successor - even going as far as stating that Jeffs never was the leader of the FLDS, but this has not necessarily been accepted by Jeffs followers, many of which claim Jeffs is still leading the church. Search youtube for CPS and see who’s the bad guy in most CPS cases. That’s the real story, not polygamy that the press has concentrated on. There’s a lot more than two “escaped” FLDS ladies complaining about CPS corruption. The conspiracy theory is that CPS turns kidnapping children into a business taking children from less than perfect but loving homes into foster families that do beat them up to turn federal dollars for state agencis. CPS treats everybody this way, but never ran into such a sensational group, or blew their whistle so loudly that everybody paid attention to how they run roughshod over people’s rights and take kids with no evidence and never lose. Stories of taking entire extendeded families, and even kids of lawyers who speak out, my lord, that’s what should be hitting Nancy Dis-Grace, not this bunch.

The FLDS are heroes for standing up for these bullies who almost never lose, and evidently cleaned up their act just in time for raid - CPS claims are zero, there were only two pregnant teens, aged 18 and 22 both married. How can you explain that they know exactly who made the calls - a black 33 yr old woman pretending to be a 16 yr old white girl, and Flora smelled something amiss, but they’re still !@#$% “investigating” it????

If CPS can identify a victim or accuse a perpetrator, (their fearless leader is already in jail, too late for that) pull the victim and nail the perp to the wall. At least the Japanese American internees weren’t accused of child abuse. Until then, leave them alone.

The unlawful removal of 468 children from the FLDS ranch in west Texas, has put CPS under the microscope. That case has led others to wonder if they can do that to FLDS children, can CPS do that to my children?

CBS 42 investigative reporter, Nancy Wilson, shows us one family who says the same thing happened to them, and eight years later they are still trying to clear their names.

This is the Gates family, Gary and Melissa have 13 children, 11 of them adopted. They saw a need for kids from a variety of backgrounds who need love in a stable home.

Imagine their surprise when 11 government employees, 6 police officers and 5 CPS workers, showed up on their doorstep.

The school called CPS when they discovered that the Gates pinned a baggy with food wrappers inside the shirt of one of the kids that was caught stealing. It included a two page explanation and who to call if there were questions.

The school did make a phone call, to CPS. Gates was shocked to find CPS workers in his home uninvited, especially when CPS refused to leave.

“How can you take 13 kids? That opened my eyes to a whole new way of government.” - Gary Gates

CPS & Police completely ignored the 4th Amendment Constitutional rights of Americans, entered the Gates home, and took away all 13 of their children, without a court order, after a mere phone call. This is a very similar situation to the FLDS raid, except that the phone call that Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (CPS) used to kidnap the FLDS children was a hoax.

Later in court, the reason CPS gave for taking the Gate’s children was that CPS felt that Mr. Gates was uncooperative with them taking away his children, and his unwillingness to cooperate put the children at risk.

Fortunately, the judge ordered the children returned immediately. An independent psychologist conducted his own review and wrote a glowing report, saying, “I’ve never said this about anyone I have evaluated: I admire the Gates, I would not hesitate to place my own children in their care.”

However, even though the judge ordered the case dismissed, and the independent review was praiseworthy, CPS did not care. CPS called the praiseworthy review disappointing and continued to fight the Gates anyway, listing them in the state’s central registry as child abusers.

Even though the Gates were innocent, CPS claims that because their opinion is that the the father emotionally emotionally abused one child by punishing him, and since all the kids saw it, that equals 13 counts of abuse. And, because the wife did not stop it, that equals another 13 counts of abuse for a grand total of 26 counts of child abuse.

The police used The First Baptist Church of ElDorado’s church buses for transportation of the children. The female who ordered the assault on this community was the same person who ordered the Branch Dividian fiasco.

Petitioner’s Exhibit 2(3 photos) shows Jeff holding a girl in his arms and another photo shows Jeffs apparently kissing the girl. But the Pictures of the girl standing and in his arms shows a flat tummy area; However, in the picture showing Jeffs apparently kissing the girl, there is an obvious fattening of the girl’s tummy and I submit leads to question whether these pictures are another hoax done through photoshop showing the girl looking about 6 months pregnant in the photo of Jeffs apparently kissing her. You can be the judge but I question the timing of mysterious appearance of the photos and especially the extended tummy that looks very much like a pregnant tummy. This gives rise to the question of authenticity of the photos, at the crucial time when the CPS is appealing the decision that favored the Moms last week. This COULD BE every bit a HOAX as the HOAX calls that started the raid on the FLDS Ranch in the first place.
