Texas Mormons - Church’s Response to Hurricane Katrina

Friday, May 30th, 2008

LDSPublicAffairs asked:

Eric Peterson of Beaumont, Texas, speaks about the Church’s (Mormon) response to Hurricane Katrina.

This video is one in a series of videos The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released to better inform the public about differences between the worldwide church based in Salt Lake City and the polygamous group in Texas that calls itself the FLDS.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - whose members are often called ‘Mormons” - placed a series of video interviews on its web site to illustrate the differences between its own members in Texas and members of the isolated polygamous group.

The Texas Mormons featured on the video interviews include a director of community theater, an orthopedic surgeon, a Justice of the Peace, a former Houston Oilers quarterback, a news anchor and a young woman with aspirations for medical school.

$14 Million Dollar Texas Raid on FLDS Ranch

Monday, July 30th, 2007

klbj590 asked:

The cost of the April raid on a polygamist compound in West Texas is expected to top $14 million, about one-third of it in lawyers’ fees.
That’s according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which obtained more than 400 pages of invoices, e-mails and other state records from an open-records law request.
The biggest chunk of spending is expected to stem from court proceedings after the state seized about 460 children from the Yearning For Zion Ranch near Eldorado, which is owned by the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
The state expects to pay nearly $4.5 million in legal fees, including paying for lawyers who represented the state and others appointed by judges to represent the children.
A state district judge in San Angelo first gave custody of the children to the state child protective services agency, but the Texas Supreme Court later returned the children to their parents.

Fundamentalist Mormons?

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

jaiotu asked:

Are members of such sects as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) Mormons? The LDS Church is currently making an (understandable) public affairs effort to distance them (the LDS) from the FLDS. But do members of the FLDS call themselves Mormons?

Author Carolyn Jessop describes her escape from the FLDS, an ultra-fundamentalist offshoot of the Mormon Church.

—–

Carolyn Jessop was born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a group splintered from and renounced by the Mormon Church, and spent most of her life in Colorado City, Arizona, the main base of the FLDS.

Since leaving the group in 2003, she has lived in West Jordan, Utah, with her eight children. Jessop is the author of “Escape,” the first-person account of life inside an ultra-fundamentalist American religious sect, and one woman’s flight to freedom with her children. - Tattered Cover Bookstore

What are the differences, LDS vs. FLDS?

Friday, August 19th, 2005

utahpirateradio asked:

LDS and FLDS claim there is a difference between the LDS and FLDS sects of Mormonism.

In fact there are over 100 different LDS sects, and they are disagree.

What is the major differences?

1. The CoJCLDS always complain how people persecute them and say they are not “Christians”. But then the way that they verbally bash FLDS and say that they are not “Mormon” is very hypocritical.

2. The LDS of the CofJCLDS still believe in polygamy and it is still in their doctrine in D&C Section 132.

If LDS want to be taken seriously as “Christians”, it should recognize all Mormons as “Mormons”.

You can’t have it both ways. If the LDS are very far removed from Christianity, yet still have a few things in common and expect to be called “Christian” then they should be curtious and loving enough to not deny the FLDS the title of “Mormon”.
